ABSTRACT

Nkosi soaks a bundle of leaves and then his entire body under the Waterfall. Soaking wet, and carrying the soggy sheaf of leaves, he makes a big pendulum-swing from Slack Strap. I think he intends to land upon sawn-off tree stump but, perhaps because he does not account for the extra weight of water carried in his leaves and in his drenched hair, he falls short of the stump, landing on the grass just in front of it. This is certainly not a ‘personal best’ and he seems disappointed, even glancing up to me as if to see whether I noticed this fault. I am tempted to write that he is embarrassed. Moments later, he makes another leap from a vertical fi re-hose (Point A) and this time lands neatly on Level 3 (Point B). He looks at me as if requesting approval or praise and I say to him: ‘Well done Nkosi.’ He continues to look straight at me as he chews a wet leaf.
