ABSTRACT

Learning Our last observation contains many instances of the chimpanzees’ learning and their provision of learning opportunities for their young. We will look now at other ways in which the learning of the young is supported by the older or more experienced chimpanzees. This educational process in chimpanzee culture may have been misinterpreted and underestimated. Again, this is hardly surprising as it seems to have been all but forgotten in human, technological societies (if not actively suppressed by their controllers). It is often assumed that chimpanzees do not give very much to each other, nor do they support, share or ‘scaffold’. This notion is very misleading. One way in which they share and give is in the education of their young and inexperienced.
