ABSTRACT
Anyone exploring India or its neighboring countries in South Asia would be amazed at the scale and variety of conflicts this region lives with. The noted historian Ramchandra Guha observed that the range of conflicts in this region is unmatched even when compared with those seen in the Balkans (2007). This variety is also reflected in the ways in which people express and address con - flicts, such as gherao (surrounding a person or building and preventing them from moving away until demands are met), hunger strikes, non-cooperation, and acts of extreme violence and destruction.
