Pierre Bonnard: The seduction of beauty
When Pierre Bonnard was on his deathbed in 1947 at the age of 80 he completed his last work, a dazzling image of an almond tree in bloom. His nephew Charles was by the bedside when Bonnard, still dissatis®ed with the painting, said: ``The green on the patch of ground to the left is wrong . . . what it needs is yellow'' (Hyman, 1998, p. 208). He asked Charles to help him add a ®nal touch of golden paint.
