Modern art and modern artists

As a psychoanalyst studying modern art and modern artists, I start with three fundamental questions: 1) What was the psychological context, the speci®c cultural milieu, which produced and then became in¯uenced by the artist in question?; 2) Who was he or she and what types of relationships did they have and maintain which may have in¯uenced the decisions and actions the artist engaged in as he or she created art?; and 3) What was the nature of the psychological life of the artist, his or her motivations, vulnerabilities, talents and con¯icts, which impacted on the creative process and in¯uenced their career, art productions and innovations as well as the art world of his or her time.
