Assessing Reading

Reading tests have always been a part of the fabric of the U.S. educational system. Throughout their existence, they have been designed to measure students’ proficiency and achievement levels and have been used as a basis for important decisions about students’ abilities and knowledge. Today, in light of the No Child Left Behind Act, rigorous new school and state academic standards, and highstakes testing, assessment touches every student in the nation. Many states now also test second language learners as part of the assessment process as well.
