ABSTRACT
Perhaps no country in the world offers the bewildering variety of diplomatic experience which Japan has enjoyed (or suffered) since it became a nation-state, Western style. The rapid and often urgent shifts in international stature have left profound impressions on the Japanese image of the outer world.
