ABSTRACT

Overcompensating coping responses represent attempts to ``do the opposite'' of schemas. A child who is neglected (and who has developed an Emotional Deprivation schema) may learn to capture the attention of others by being charming, ¯irty, or theatrical. A child who feels deep shame or worthlessness (Defectiveness/Shame schema) may be driven to succeed by outworking others, or may develop a dominant, aggressive style that helps him reach the top. A child who is bullied or abused may become a bully herself, hiding her fear (Vulnerability to Harm schema) behind a facËade of toughness.
