Thus far we have considered the true Japanese sounds in reference to English sounds. Now we are in position to consider the Romaji, the foreign style of writing Japanese languarge.

The history of Romaji dates back to the 16th Century, when Francis Xavier came to Japan to preach Christian doctrine. Dutch and Portuguese merchants also frequented Japanese shores for the purpose of trade in those days. Some books have been published in the Japanese language written in European characters.
