ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a key element of the text-task-respondent (TTR) theory of functional literacy-the cognitive and linguistic task demands of everyday functional literacy tasks. It details each of the seven task demands: read words, comprehend sentences, search text, identify computations, perform computations, infer meaning, and apply information. The chapter then discusses the frequency and difficulty of these task demands, both in the national assessments of adult literacy and in real-world settings.
