ABSTRACT

Character is a large word, full of significance; no metaphoric river can more than hint at its meaning. — Louis Sullivan

… suspicious though architects and critics became of “character” in the modernist era, they never…found it possible to dispense with it altogether. — Adrian Forty

The modern era in architecture succeeded in all but eliminating references to character. It was considered unprofessional to consider such a subjective, personal judgment about a work of architecture. The twentieth-century rational human did not engage in speculation about such unscientific matters. That was left to the poet.
