ABSTRACT

In a thinly veiled reference to Marcus Vitruvius Pollio’s De architectura, Wines provides his 1987 “manifesto to mania” critique of the modern movement. It was visionary in terms of the recipes it provided for a consummated marriage between art and architecture, and landscape and architecture. The work of SITE, Wines’ design firm, reflects his rejection of the formalism and functionalism of the modern movement. For him, architecture is practiced as an environmental art. In the 23 years since De-Architecture, the work of his firm SITE has evolved into a commitment to “green” environmental architecture. The 2000 publication of his coffeetable book Green Architecture established him as a spokesperson for the movement.
