ABSTRACT
Architecture has always depended heavily on technology. For most of the history of architecture, that technology has been stuck in its primitive stage, that of sticks and bricks. Only a few technological advances occurred during the first 4,000 years of building – the arch, dome, concrete, steel, and glass. However, in recent years technology has dramatically changed architecture. That change has come from several directions. Perhaps the most profound has been the introduction of the computer. It has revolutionized not only the process of design and the representation of those designs, but also what it is possible to build. New materials have also been introduced at an accelerated rate in recent years. Nanotechnology, composite fiber materials, recycling technology, advances in communications, and sustainable energy production technologies have all made an impact.
