ABSTRACT

Two mortars were rolled over sideways in front of them. As they did with wheat, they would strike a stalk against the side of the mortar and the triangular grains would fall to the ground, some bouncing away into the bright sunshine. But unlike wheat the buckwheat stalks were moist and sticky. Just peeling one free from the bundle took effort. The stalks had to be struck again and again before all the ripe grains would fall. Those that were still green would resist to the end. The yard had been swept clean for the occasion. Uhei had already seen to it that no weeds remained unpulled.
