ABSTRACT

When Kanji came running up to the bank of the Kinu River a thick fog had descended, shrouding the water just a few yards from shore. There was no boat. Kanji assumed it was on the opposite side of the river and shouted impatiently to summon it. The boatman’s reply came back loudly from near at hand. Taken by surprise, Kanji froze and said nothing more. A moment later the prow of the boat emerged from the fog. Kanji got on board.
