ABSTRACT

This sect, whose complete name is Jôdo-Shinshu (True Sect of the Pure Land), professes the same principle as the Jôdo sect. Like the latter it is a Japanese creation. Its founder was the Shonin1 Shinran, who lived from 1173 to 1262. Its two principal texts are the Daï Muryojukyō and

the Amidakyō (Sanskrit: Sukhâvativyûha). These are also the canonical texts of the Jôdo sect, and in them Amida promises Paradise to whomsoever will have invoked him sincerely by pronouncing his name.
