ABSTRACT

As we have already seen, on one hand, the sun itself was divine, the visible sun-disc or solar orb was a divinity; on the other, the sun was completely humanized, endowed with human passions and will, acting as a sentient being, endowed with male or female sex. So we see that the Deity of the Sun is Amaterasu-Ōmikami or the Heaven-Shining-Great-August-Deity, otherwise called Ōhirumemuchi-no-Kami or the Female Possessor of the Great Sun, i.e., the Spirit of the Sun, who had quarrels with her impetuous brother Susano-o-no-Mikoto and at last took refuge in the Heavenly Rock-Cave.
