ABSTRACT
Information and communications technology (ICT) was born in the West. This implies several conditions, each of which is important to understand the production of informational urbanism. First, the technology itself may be said to have originated in the United States following the end of the Second World War. Second, much of its early development occurred in California, literally the western edge of the United States, a place of special importance in the global imagination owing to its aura of possibility and new beginnings. Finally, theorizations of ICT emanate almost exclusively from Western perspectives.
