ABSTRACT

Wallace, B., Cave, D. and Berry, A. (2009) Teaching Problem-Solving and Thinking Skills through Science, London: David Fulton; see pp. 1-2, 8, 146.

Wallace et al. base their approach to learning on the ‘Every Child Matters’ agenda and ‘inclusion with differentiation’. Their premise is that although teachers must plan carefully, pupil involvement in what is learned and how it is learned creates a vibrant learning environment that increases motivation, independence and engagement. The authors claim that other benefits of teachers and learners working interactively to construct knowledge include heightened self-esteem, enjoyment and success, with the inevitable improvements in behaviour and social cohesion.
