ABSTRACT

Cullingford, C. (2009) The Art of Teaching: Experiences of schools,Abingdon: Routledge; see pp. 70-3.

Cullingford’s book is aptly named the art of teaching, as opposed to the science or craft of teaching. He regrets that teaching has become associated with the control and command of children – with discipline and authority – rather than satisfying the deepseated human desire to learn. The chapter from which the extract that follows is taken is concerned with teachers as they see themselves and as others see them.
