ABSTRACT

Can you start a sentence with a conjunction? Why or why not? Do you do it anyway?

Question: Can you start a sentence with And or Because? Answer: Not according to strict grammarians. However, there is a certain

elasticity of formal usage in academic, business, and other professional settings. For example, a New Yorker magazine article I was reading had three instances of And at the start of sentences in the last two paragraphs. To be fair, those were the only occurrences in a fulllength article, but there they were in print.
