ABSTRACT
In the past the shift from coal to oil has been accomplished with a minimum of disturbance to industrial activities. In fact the use of oil has speeded up the process of economic development in the industrial world, with a minimum of cost and effort. As a result the world has enjoyed a very high standard of living beyond precedent. All the advances and economic growth enjoyed have been the result of a very cheap source of energy, that is, oil.
