ABSTRACT

We are now completing our presentation of the Four Noble Truths. The first three Noble Truths (Dukkha, Tanha, Nirvana) were discussed in chapters 6 through 10. These together formed a general conception, a conception that was discussed in chapters 11 through 13. We now turn our attention to the fourth Noble Truth, concerning the eight-fold path that leads out ofDukkha. It is called eight-fold because there are eight disciplines that contribute to making progress on this path. 1 F ollowing the suggestion by Rahula (1974), I group these eight into three categories: Wisdom and Ethics, which are discussed in this chapter, and Mental Discipline, reserved for chapter 15.
