ABSTRACT

This “inside joke” in the record industry reflects the (supposedly) typical response by producers to any question about how good a recording, or track, or whatever, is. The primary focus of this chapter is on the role of the producer and the agreements that producers have with labels, but it is not possible to discuss the production process without also addressing the evolution of studios into their present day configuration. Of course, studios are nothing without people to run them, the audio engineers. Finally, this chapter addresses audio and music business education-a process that has evolved from strictly learning on the job into college (and other) classrooms.
