ABSTRACT

Screenplay dialogue contributes towards creating the illusion of a real and believable film world and, by giving voices to characters, makes them appear threedimensional and complex. Dialogue in the narrative film is subject to the codes of realism which have evolved since the early days of cinema and is, therefore, carefully constructed to appear natural. The words spoken are directed at the audience, who view the unfolding drama through the eyes of the characters and are encouraged to identify with them as they talk.
