ABSTRACT

To-day marionette performances are occasionally given in Tokyo by two skilful puppeteers, Yūki Magosaburō and Yoshida Kunigoro. They have, however, no theatre of their own and attract only a few spectators. In Osaka there is a marionette theatre called the Bunraku-zathe only theatre of its kind in Japan-which is said to have been established by an amateur Awaji chanter named Uemura Bunrakuken, about a hundred years ago. This theatre, in which skilful chanters and puppeteers give performances almost all the year round, is reckoned among the especial attractions of the city.
