Development of Sexuality and Spirituality

Last week, we invited our neighbors to our house for dinner. Although we’d chatted pleasantly in the middle of the gravel driveway for several years, none of us had taken the time to get to know each other on any deeper level. is year the time seemed right for a gathering. As the evening progressed from coleslaw to barbequed ank steak, we found that our dinner was opening the pages of new friendship. We share in common not only age and interests but also the fact that we’ve both been with our partners for more than 30 years. One of the delightful surprises of the evening was in discovering that we also share the blessing of an active and meaningful spirituality. e fact that one couple is lesbian and the other is straight soon faded into the background. What seemed more important was our mutual enjoyment of the freshly baked rhubarb pie! I found myself thinking of the statement, “e more we are dierent, the more we are the same.”
