ABSTRACT

Disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs) of childhood and adolescence, including oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD), are the most common comorbid psychiatric disorders diagnosed in youth with substance abuse disorders (SUDs). This chapter outlines theoretical considerations of ODD and CD, distinct and common features of both, and relevant clinical issues. Also, rates of these disorders and relevant gender and racial-ethnic issues are covered, genetic and environmental liabilities are outlined, and the relationship of DBD with substance abuse is discussed. Screening and assessment techniques for DBD and interventions (including newer and more experimental treatments) are introduced. The chapter ends with clinical recommendations and areas for future research. Attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is covered in Chapter 8, authored by Wilens.
