Assessment and Evaluation
Assessment and evaluation have a valuable role in clinical care, and substance abuse treatment is no exception. Assessment in substance abuse treatment frequently involves an extensive process that requires analysis of the many factors causing, maintaining, and contributing to the client’s problem, its severity, and its consequences. Several different types of assessment exist, such as diagnostic criteria, standardized testing instruments, and clinical judgment. In this chapter we will talk in-depth about the nature of assessment in the field of substance abuse and how solutionfocused clinicians use assessment in their clinical work.
