ABSTRACT

The mentality of the Japanese was very fruitfully explored by two identical, wide-ranging attitude surveys conducted in 1973 and 1978 by NHK, the public broadcasting organization. Utilizing data from those surveys, I shall devote two chapters to analyzing some of the variations within the contemporary national mentality. This chapter covers the most telling generational variations among the whole population while the next chapter focuses on the attitudinal changes occurring during the 1970s within the younger generation.
