ABSTRACT
In the previous seven chapters the diversity of development theories and practices has been very apparent. This diversity starts with the definitions of ‘development’. While some theorists view economic growth and increases in economic wealth as the key definition of ‘development’, others consider ‘development’ to encompass ideas of greater autonomy and choice about how individuals live their lives (Table 8.1). In addition, ‘development’ can be seen as an end point to which particular societies aspire, and/or a process of change and what some have called ‘progress’.
