The History of Nightwood ’s Production
The history of Nightwood’s publication is one of literary controversy. A number of Barnesian scholars and admirers have recently attempted to provide accounts of the complicated revision and prolonged editorial process preceding the 1936 Faber & Faber publication of the novel. T. S. Eliot’s editing of Nightwood has become one of the prominent themes in Barnes scholarship within the last ten years. Also, scholars have attempted to assess the infl uence that Emily Holmes Coleman, Barnes’s close friend and the author of Shutter of Snow,2 exercised over Barnes’s writing. The research has spun prolifi c academic discussions about the extent of the cuts both Eliot and Coleman introduced.
