ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we explore the dynamics of age-structured population of contamination agents (isotopes) of different ages and related radioactive contamination of ground waters. The goal of this chapter is to identify the power of a point source of age-structured contamination in ground water based on the data observed in control wells using variational techniques for solving inverse problems. To solve the initial-boundary problem, we use the Lagrangian–Eulerian approach to finite-difference schemes approximating the convection–diffusion equation. The model examples demonstrate a high degree of convergence and numerical effectiveness of the proposed method.
