ABSTRACT

It is quite clear from the descriptive statistics presented in Section 2.3(a) that a general analysis of working time and employment would be incomplete without significant attention devoted to part-time employment. In several major economies part-time employment constitutes a significant proportion of total employment. This largely reflects female employment since in the region of 90 per cent of part-time jobs are undertaken by females. This phenomenon is reflected in the fact that much of the work on part-time employment is subsumed in the extensive literature devoted to the participation decision and the supply of working hours of economically active females.
