Ieyasu did not care for what he called useless amusements, though he sometimes went to No performances and knew how to take part in them, but even there his mind ran on military matters, it would appear, for while at a No performance at the Nijo palace he suddenly remarked to Itakura Shigemune, the Governor of Kyoto: “What I was thinking was that it is just about the right time to cut bamboos for the banner poles.”
