History, action and identity: Revisiting the “second” great debate and assessing its importance for social theory

Assessing progress in theory-building in International Relations involves two issues. First, what are the criteria for appraising theory development and, second, what are the factors driving this development? Is it mainly the changing political problématique, or the debates within the discipline, or the organisation of the field as an academic discipline that explains theory development?
