ABSTRACT
The Japanese people had been taught that the army of the Emperor was different from the armies of other countries. Mutiny and murder had now shown them that it was different from what they themselves had supposed. It was not the servant of the civil power, but the master. Its officers considered themselves the modern samurai, the ruling class.
