ABSTRACT

This chapter is about developing approaches and techniques which will help your diverse range of students get the best from their learning both as individuals and as members of a group. Examples are included which illustrate how individual differences can be recognised and accommodated, and individual disadvantages reduced and overcome, with a combination of inclusive learning, personalisation and differentiation. Ways in which you can ensure that equality and diversity are both embedded in your own teaching, and valued and acted on by your students, are then explored. The theme of widening participation is included, and scenarios are provided to help you consider how new students can be attracted to your organisation, and the role you as a teacher can play in that. The chapter closes with some important advice on ways of setting targets with your students, using individual learning plans (ILPs) and the ‘helping skills’ which are a crucial underpinning of the teacher’s role in working with diversity.
