ABSTRACT
In Japan, information technology has been a vital part of manufacturing automation for decades. A central factory computer provides a production plan and shop minicomputers and microcomputers in the factory run machines that manufacture products. In the early years, production plans were punched out on cards, which then were transferred and fed into the machine-control computers.
