ABSTRACT

The Statistical Picture How do the existing Japanese manufacturing affiliates in the UK see the future of their operations? We asked each company to estimate its sales (at constant value terms) and employment in 1985 and 1990. Of the 20 affiliates providing data, 18 were planning for a sizeable increase in the volume of their UK output by the end of 1985. The average expected growth of output of CTV sets between the end of 1982 and the end of 1985 was 114% (ranging from 25 to 328%); that of video recorders 306%; that of audio equipment 120%, that of video cassettes (from 1983 to 1985) 33%; and that of semiconductors 428%. Overall, the nine Group 1 affiliates expected to increase their numbers employed from 3,889 in December 1982 to 6,100 in December 1985, i.e. by 57%.
