ABSTRACT

In the early postwar years, the differences with prewar business practice were clearly noticeable and much was written about Japanese management evolving into a profession. Today, however, there is still scepticism in calling it a profession. Given the existing corporate culture, managers and executives are expected to start at the bottom of the corporate structure to acquire gradually the managerial capacity necessary for corporate effectiveness. Experience is stressed over knowledge, for in an organic organization, management is not considered a profession, but is instead perceived in relation to status.
