Who took the cog out of cognitive science? Mentalism in an era of anti-cognitivism

Behaviorism I remember as the doctrine of the black box: stick to the observable input and output of a system, and refrain from theorizing about the system’s internal clockwork of cog wheels (“cog-works” for short) that create the causal connections between observable stimuli and responses. The Cognitive Revolution supposedly opened the black box to theory.
