ABSTRACT

Portewig’s study of visual rhetorical invention, her term for the decision-making process by which visual elements are incorporated into technical documents, is an excellent illustration of contemporary social science research methods applied to technical communication practice. Though we believe that her article illustrates a study that is commendable for both its process and its results, we were especially keen to include it in this volume because of its thorough description and explanation of the qualitative methods she employs.
