ABSTRACT

Romanticism passed its heyday in Europe in the mid-nineteenth century, but in America it still remains an unfi nished chapter. It took on a unique Transcendentalist American form with Emerson and Thoreau, and its libertarian fl avor still survives in a wide range of American movements, including hippies, environmentalists, and anti-federalist militias. Many of these groups apparently looked at the Indigenous peoples of the Americas and decided that they exemplifi ed the idea of nature over culture, one of the multitude of concepts associated with a Romantic worldview (Honderich 2005: 821).
