ABSTRACT

For 35 years now Jonathan Evans has been the leading proponent of the dualprocess approach to human reasoning (Evans, 2003; Wason & Evans, 1975). We follow Evans (2003) and use Stanovich and West’s (2000) terms for these systems: System 1 and System 2. Originally, these two systems were described using the terms heuristic (System 1) and analytic (System 2) (Evans, 1989). In his own words, Jonathan’s current conception of each system is as follows:

System 1 processes are rapid, parallel and automatic in nature: only their final product is posted in consciousness . . . The System 1 processes most often described are those that are formed by associative learning processes of the kind produced by neural networks.
