ABSTRACT

I n a review of rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) phenomena, Potter (1984) remarked on the surprising inadvertent discovery in her laboratory by Helene Intraub that a pictured object shown twice within a sequence of pictures was frequently seen only once. This was an unexpected observation because, in most circumstances, when an item such as a word is shown twice, the identi- cation of the second occurrence is facilitated; responding to the repeated word is faster and more likely to be correct than response to that word when preceded by an unrelated word or neutral item.
