This book is in the spirit of enquiry – an exploration as much as an exposition. I have set out to learn about story and that was particularly the project of these first few chapters on theory. This chapter is a pause to reflect and to gather ideas and insights before I turn towards the educational applications in Part III. This chapter does not contain much new material and I have not repeated references. In the first section of this chapter (p. 90) I aim to:

reflect on what I have written and learned in the first five chapters; identify what I would call my ‘insights’ that arose in the writing – insights are

marked with an asterisk (*); conclude this theory section of the book, having prepared the ground for the

more practical chapters.
