ABSTRACT

The maritime and shipbuilding industry in Turku (a medium-sized city in southwest Finland) has more than 300 years of history; ships have been built in Turku since 1700. Whereas many traditional shipbuilding strongholds in Europe have been driven out of the market by Asian rivals, the sector in Turku has prospered. Today, large luxury cruise ships are produced in Turku and its region. The order book for new cruise ships and vessels is responsible for a very large share of industrial employment and value added in the region. The production of ships still requires a lot of blue collar work, but we will see that the knowledge component of the production process has increased dramatically.
