As professionals in counseling, psychology, social work, and other related fields, college counselors engage in a number of professional activities. Some of these activities may lie outside the scope of their work on campus, but many of them are related to their counseling center duties. In fact, for many college counselors, professional activities (such as acquiring and maintaining licensure) may be a requirement for continued employment, whereas other activities (such as research productivity and involvement in professional organizations) may not necessarily be required but are encouraged or expected to some extent. This chapter will delve into the following professional activities of college counselors: research and scholarly work, membership and involvement in professional organizations, licensure and certification, continuing education and professional development, and private practice.
