THE PRIMARY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF COLLEGE COUNSELORS
The primary functions of college counselors can be divided into the following five categories: counseling, crisis intervention, consultation and outreach, training and supervision, and administrative duties. It is important to keep in mind that there can be significant variability from one counseling center to another in terms of how much time is devoted to these functions. The scope of services provided by a counseling center will depend on a number of factors, including the size of the institution, whether it is a public or private institution, whether it is largely a residential or commuter campus, and the number and expertise of counseling center staff. All college counselors must provide services in accordance with applicable ethical principles and standards set forth by the American Psychological Association (APA) (2002) and the American Counseling Association (ACA) (2005). Other ethical codes (e.g., for the National Association of Social Workers) would be relevant as well.
